DIY MASK Air Brake Piston Head

The MASK piston head is the easiest piston head around to convert into an air brake piston head for AEG sniper set up. The MASK piston head has a built in crater designed to where the sorbo tablet is sited and even a long screw can just simply pass through without any drilling a hole in the piston head . This is perfect for air brake modification. But before we proceed to the main objective of this topic. Here are some facts about the air brake piston head.

Q. What is air brake piston head?
A. Air brake piston head is commonly use in Tokyo Marui VSR10 sniper rifle. This piston head has a long shaft facing forward to the cylinder head.

Q. What is the purpose of air brake?
A. Air brake is designed to increase drag during the forward motion of the piston to the cylinder head thus listen the impact when it collide to the cylinder head and generally produces a silent sound during the actual firing with bbs.
*This is best for sniper rifle and semi auto AEG for silent and unnoticeable operation in the field.
* Sniper gun should be quite as much as possible so that the enemy wouldn't notice where the bbs came from.

Q. If there is an air drag, then there must be a loss of muzzle velocity?
A. Yes, there is a minor loss of FPS, because the speed of forwarding piston is being block by the air drag.

Q. Can I use the air brake piston head in a high speed set up AEG?
A. Yes, as long as the air brake shaft has enough tolerance inside the cylinder head's hole. But I can not guarantee for a best result in high speed set up.
* This modification requires high understanding in AEG mechbox .

Steps on converting MASK into an air brake piston head.

materials needed:
acryl rod, long screw ( 3 x 30), glue, drill/drill bit, sand paper #300 #1000, locktite and thin plastic/wood rod.

Step 1- Remove the sorbo tablet in the piston head. Use any wood or plastic thin rod to remove the sorbo tablet ( Do not use a sharp or pointed rod). Gently insert the rod from the back side of the piston head and push the sorbo tablet out from the piston head crater . Be careful not to damage the piston head thread.

Step 2- After removing the sorbo tablet, make a center hole on it by drilling or using a hole puncher.


Step 3- Cut the 6mm acryl rod and start sanding it. Try to insert inside the cylinder head's hole once in a while to check the right diameter of the acryl rod. The acryl rod must move freely inside the cylinder head's hole. Do not over sand the acryl rod.


Step 4- Use a 3mm drill bit and drill the center of the rod. Approximately 6mm in depth.


- After sanding and shaping the rod. This is the actual air brake shaft.


- Air brake shaft must move freely inside the cylinder head's hole. It must have enough tolerance to avoid jamming and any trouble in the future.

Step 5- Place the piston head in the piston, place the bearing and lock with the long screw. Do not over tight the screw.

Step 6- Apply glue or adhesive in the piston head crater.


Step 7- Insert the screw in the sorbo tablet . Press the sorbo tablet inside the crater.


Step 8- Apply small amount of oil inside the air brake shaft hole.


Step 9- Insert the long screw to the air brake shaft. Turn clockwise at the same time push the screw inside(same of process of inserting a screw/bolt in the knot). Do it continuously until the air brake shaft touches the bottom of the piston head crater . Make it sure that the air brake shaft is well sited.
